Republic by 2010, summit told
Saturday Apr 19 18:38 AEST
Australia will be a republic within two years if delegates to the 2020 summit in Canberra have their way.
Summiteers in the governance stream voted three to one to endorse the ambitious target, proposed by federal Home Affairs Minister Bob Debus on Saturday afternoon.
Delegates originally agreed to a 12-year target.
But when Mr Debus challenged delegates to commit to a shorter time frame, he was cheered and clapped.
"I want us to say that we will proceed to a republic by 2010," Mr Debus told the 100 delegates in his group.

Dunno
If we are a republic then we are independent and we are not part of the commonwealth then are we?
I would like to see the union jack off the flag. It shouldnt be on there. We are not a colony anymore.........

Australia could remain part of the commonwealth, most of the countries in the British Commonwealth or Commonwealth of Nations as it is now known are Republics, Mozambique is a member and they were not even a British dependent or colony. As far as the Flag goes there are only, I think 5 nations in the commonwealth, including the UK, that use the Union flag as part of their own flag. It's not that I am the sales rep for the commonwealth, but from my upbringing I may have a few colonialist views, my primary school had pre first world war world maps on the wall, most of the world was pink (an odd colour to choose for an empire) and in the school at least Britain was great. I suppose part of me still feels it should be.:smilie_flagge3: Though I think it would be good to have a United European Nation, but will never happen to many old rivalries.:smilie_flagge23: Meanwhile the Irish cleverly infiltrate and silently colonise the globe just waiting for the appropriate time to rise up and take controll of the world, Impireacht na Eirreann.:smilie_flagge16::smilie_flagge16:

I feel that if the day comes when Australia does become a republic, the union jack will go.......... lollllllllllllllll
My parents are both English & every time I talk about this with my mother, she gets the s**ts lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.
I know that us and New Zealand and Fiji have the union jack. Not sure of the others. We dumped "God save the queen" years ago, dont know why we stuck with the flag. When this generation of queen loyalists pass on, that is when we will become a republic.
