I am wondering if anyone could help me here. I am wanting to know if there was a smithfield gaol open in 1831 in Dublin and was it normal to ship convicts to dublin then over to england then onto australia?
I have trried to research this gaol but I cant find anything on it being open at that time.
Would there have been any other gaol in dublin that started with an 's' at that time?
Any help would be most appreciated on this
Thanks
Tracey

Hi Tracey, our resident historian is out of the country at the moment, so I don't know if any one else can help. Happy Australia Day anyway!

Thanks for the info Danny. I had been looking at that archive one yesterday and found it very interesting looking through that and seeing what the crimes were. I found it amazing how the sentences varied from court to court for the same crime.I cant believe that someone could get 7 years for something so petty as to stealing some food when they probably had a starving family.
I have read a few books on irish history and it has opened my eyes up , thats for sure.
I have read a lot on the irish uprisings and the reasons behind it all.One book I read "Ireland Awakening" is great. Its an epic novel but its based on the history of Ireland and the author has done his research.
I quite like history and whenever we investigate any area I like to do the research on it.
That irish prisons link mentioned that the smithfield penitentiary was empy in 1841. I wish I could find something on this at an earlier date. I think this place existed in 1831 and it was used less and less and was in a state of disrepair.I think they sent young convicts there prior to their transportation.
There doesnt seem to be much on this place.
I didnt know this place existed but have been told of it by a spirit. I know it sounds crazy, but its the truth. That is why I am researching it now.
I had a very nice Australia day. Didnt go into Sydney as it gets too crowded and I am not one for crowds or traffic. I had a nice BBQ at home. The weather was great.Monday is the public holiday and we have double demerit points for traffic offences on the long weekend , so I would rather not drive. I got pulled over the other day and got let off with a warning doing 83 in a 63km zone. That has got to be the first time I have ever got off lollllll I told the cop some story about how when the sun hits my speedometer it lights up the background and makes the numbers hard to see lolllllll. It wasnt totally bs as that does happen sometimes. He told me to drive with my lights on then and that would highlight the speedo. "yes I will most certainly do that in future" he he ;)

Doesnt time fly. I wrote that a year ago becaues its Australia day weekend again this weekend and we are copping 40.5 deg c heat outside at my place. It always gets a bit hotter where i am to sydney even though i am ony one hour north. I live in a valley. They predicted 40 today so if its that hot here, the western suburbs of sydney at the base of the blue mtns would have got somethign like 42 or 43 I would say.
This is the hottest i have felt for a few years.

Well the max i got here at my place was 42c. Believe me you do not want that temp. Its stifling.Had a lovely cool change come through at 6pm within minutes the temp dropped about 10 deg.
No swimming pool. They are too much work. Easier to go for a run out the beach. I hate it though when i hear the neighbours splashign around in theirs.

15 min drive over the ridgeway over the back if you risk not coming across a cop on the way or 20 of you do the right thing. I do the right thing now because i got pulled over there. Its ridiculous becuase its country type road. He let me off though...first time ever lol
